I had such high hopes for this week’s blog post, including Fairport Convention references like “Bird On A Wire.” Alas, after analyzing phrases like Finding Gold Nuggets, I landed on the only option that would work with today’s headlines: Searching For Beauty Among The Scatalogical.
Of course, if you’re not familiar with the works of Rabelais, Burroughs, or even Jonathan Swift, you might not even know how frequently a topic as lowbrow and disagreeable as, well, poop, might feature in our language. Unfortunately, I get to contribute to said topic, thanks to some rather misguided toilet training that apparently scarred my toddler brain for a lifetime.
I’ve referenced my dream journal here before, one which I recently started again after a multi-year lapse. Turns out I’ve had occasional bathroom-themed dreams at different times over the years, none of which were particularly pleasant.
Naturally, I wouldn’t want to discuss these publicly, so I attribute them to J. Edgar Schnatz, my troubled protagonist (or antagonist, depending on whose side you’re on) in my work-in-progress, Hot Scenes. You’ve been forewarned. Also, you’ll need a dark sense of humor to appreciate it.
In the words of Danny DeVito’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia character Frank Reynolds: “Poop is funny!”
